Last and first...

And ended the year as I started it. Knitting socks...
On our weekend away in Rotterdam (a city break I can really recommend, even in mid-winter!) I finished off the socks for hubby...
A sock and hotel linen
The yarn was a gift from my Sinter-RAK early December. The Lana Grossa Meilenweit yarn was a stretch cotton, a new 'feeling' for me. At the start, it was a bit weird to knit with, but I quickly got used to it. I used a simple 5x1 rib and large Dutch heel. They turned out a bit on the big side, but as hubby will be wearing them in boots mostly, that's not a problem. And he's a size 44/45/46, his feet can never decide what they are exactly, which is very annoying! :D
Socks up close and pesonal
I cast off just after the fireworks went off and we uncorked the champers... And then, the next day cast on a new pair: some Flying Saucers, for me!
The unwinding had been a bit of a pain. The yarn is wound on the skein two threads together, which means you have to unwind them into separate balls. I did consider just knitting from the cake, but decided against it. It took about half an hour to unwind them. No fun...
Then this happened...

Yes, the colours are a bit on the drab side in the picture, but hey, where are they at all? Definitely considering how it continues...
There it is!
The inside of the cake seems to have hardly caught any dye. Which means my toes look like they have been dipped in bleach or something... But then the saucers started to appear and I though, ach, this is fun, forget about the toes!
And I knitted, and knitted, turned the (yoyo) heel and knitted some more. Awaiting the next saucer shape. But it just didn't appear. Yes, I got more of those two-tone semi-saucers, but according to the picture on the cake, there was supposed to be another one halfway up the leg...
So I knitted some more, until I ran out of yarn and had to cast off... And there it was, the saucer, all the way at the top. To say it mildly, I was not a happy bunny...

I literally have 5 grams of yarn left, so it's not as if I cheated. :(
On the upside, the yarn is a dream to knit with, soft and squishy. But that is always the case with SchoppelWolle, I also used it for my Autumn Heel Socks.

Just to show they are both the same (and I actually knit two socks). See the bleachy bits?
Right, so that's sock pair number 1 for 2011... The next pair will be cast on soon: I'm trying to knit one pair a month...

Volgens mij is dit de eerste keer dat je teleurgesteld bent in een bol garen.
Ze zijn wel leuk, maar je hebt gelijk; geen flying saucers.

Gelukkig zitten de tenen in je schoenen, dus erg opvallen zal het niet! Goed voornemen, dat paar per maand! Maar pas op, dat kan ook uit de hand lopen... ;-)

A while ago, on the Dutch RAK group at Ravelry, one of our members asked for some assistance with some sock knitting. She said she'd love to have homeknit socks, but had never managed to knit a pair herself. So, Aal and I came to the rescue. Within 3 days of sending off the yarn, she had her first pair of socks back from Aal. That woman is so amazingly fast!!! My socks took a bit longer, mainly because I had to rip back a few times.  Knitting late at night, having to calculate while knitting, bad lightling... etc... But, eventually, they did get done!!! I suggested knitting her some Skew socks, as with the self-striping yarn she sent me, I thought the effect would be super cool. And it turned out great, even though I was a bit miffed to see that the colour depth was not the same throughout the ball of yarn. Luckily this only becomes really apparent in the leg part, which most people have under their trousers ;) A few pictures of the socks still here... See the difference?

Back from our holiday to Norn Iron

We're still buzzing, people. Totally loved it! It was mint! After what had felt like way too long we finally were able to hug our friends Damien, Katrina, Mark, Orla, and Alistair, have granny Mary-Ann spoil the kids rotten, and just enjoy being 'back'. Because that is how it felt. We stayed in a beautiful apartment in Portrush, with enough bedrooms to accommodate us and granny Mary-Ann, a massive kitchen where I actually cooked as well, next to a train stop, which made travelling a breeze, and five minutes from the West Strand. Heaven! We went to the Giant's Causeway, explored Portrush, enjoyed the beach and many of the cafés and playgrounds around town, and travelled to Coleraine and Portstewart. The kids absolutely loved it, and we were all in tears when the plane took off and we flew home again... But, we're making plans to relocate! Shetland - day 3 - Monday October 8

Our third day in Shetland, and a very special one. Not only my wee boy Samuel celebrated his birthday - he turned 6 - but Monique as well. So while I phoned home early in the morning to sing Happy Birthday to my son, Monique had her own choir on the phone ;) After a quick breakfast, we set out for Lerwick, and on the way there we decided to go for a walk along the beach first, before venturing into town. Wearing my Shetland hat, which became a very welcome, warm and trusty companion The cemetery at the Knab We drove around Breiwick Bay and parked our car at the Knab, a natural promontory facing Bressay, where there are several relics from WWII and also a huge cemetery, with some amazing and beautiful headstones.
