Return of the garter stitch - Ribbelssssss

Nearly everyone starts with this stitch, it's the first one in any stitch dictionary and it's a stitch that forms the basis of many intricate Shetland pattern: the garter stitch.

Bijna iedereen begint ermee, het is de eerste steek in elk stekenboek en het is een steek die de basis vormt van heel wat ingewikkelde kantpatronen uit Shetland: de ribbelsteek.

It's busy in Casa Moss. So busy that the thought of having to knit complicated patterns is slightly too much. The triangular shawl I knit in stockinette for the National Spinning Weekend, with a crocheted border, was complicated enough, as were the Hermione socks (knit 3, purl 1), and to make sure that I have a few more options than just spin white Shetland wool every night (totally no stimuli and difficult decisions, great to clear the brain at the end of the day), I went back to garter stitch.

Het is druk in Casa Moss. Zo druk dat de gedachte aan het breien van ingewikkelde patronen momenteel even iets te veel is. Het kippendoekje dat ik voor de Landelijke Spindag breide, met zijn gehaakte randje, was al ingewikkeld genoeg, net als de Hermione sokken (3 recht, 1 averecht), en om te voorkomen dat ik elke avond gewoon witte Shetlandwol zit te spinnen (heerlijk prikkelloos, fantastisch om de kop even leeg te krijgen), heb ik teruggegrepen op de ribbel. 

It's lovely, this 'immer gerade-aus' knitting. Well, in the case of Batman's short scarf I had to change colours - Fibonacci of course... - and in the case of Colour Affection I have to increase here and there and change colours every two needles. Great. Simple. Just what I need.

Lekker zeg, gewoon 'immer gerade-aus' breien. Nou ja, in het geval van de korte sjaal voor Batman met kleurwisselingen - wel Fibonacci, dat dan weer wel... - en in het geval van Colour Affection met wat meerderingen en steeds 2 naalden van elke kleur. Lekker. Simpel. Precies wat ik nodig heb.

But the scarf is done, and Colour Affection is also quickly nearing the end (and I sincerely hope that tight edge will not annoy me so much that I decide to ripriprip the whole thing...), so I'm on the look-out for another nice and easy garter stitch project. I think it will be some house socks, to felt in the machine. And hopefully that will get me back to full energy strength to get started on the two-tone Xmas socks that are becoming a bit of a tradition... I'm thinking of these...


Maar de sjaal is klaar, en Colour Affection is ook bijna af (en ik hoop van harte dat die strakke rand me niet zo irriteert dat ik het hele geval weer besluit uit te halen), dus ben ik op zoek naar opnieuw een eenvoudig ribbelprojectje. Sloffen, den ik, om dan te vilten in de wasmasjien. En hopelijk heb ik dan weer genoeg energie om te beginnen aan de tweekleurige kerstsokken die een beetje traditie aan het worden zijn... Ik zit te denken aan deze...

A while ago, on the Dutch RAK group at Ravelry, one of our members asked for some assistance with some sock knitting. She said she'd love to have homeknit socks, but had never managed to knit a pair herself. So, Aal and I came to the rescue. Within 3 days of sending off the yarn, she had her first pair of socks back from Aal. That woman is so amazingly fast!!! My socks took a bit longer, mainly because I had to rip back a few times.  Knitting late at night, having to calculate while knitting, bad lightling... etc... But, eventually, they did get done!!! I suggested knitting her some Skew socks, as with the self-striping yarn she sent me, I thought the effect would be super cool. And it turned out great, even though I was a bit miffed to see that the colour depth was not the same throughout the ball of yarn. Luckily this only becomes really apparent in the leg part, which most people have under their trousers ;) A few pictures of the socks still here... See the difference?

Back from our holiday to Norn Iron

We're still buzzing, people. Totally loved it! It was mint! After what had felt like way too long we finally were able to hug our friends Damien, Katrina, Mark, Orla, and Alistair, have granny Mary-Ann spoil the kids rotten, and just enjoy being 'back'. Because that is how it felt. We stayed in a beautiful apartment in Portrush, with enough bedrooms to accommodate us and granny Mary-Ann, a massive kitchen where I actually cooked as well, next to a train stop, which made travelling a breeze, and five minutes from the West Strand. Heaven! We went to the Giant's Causeway, explored Portrush, enjoyed the beach and many of the cafés and playgrounds around town, and travelled to Coleraine and Portstewart. The kids absolutely loved it, and we were all in tears when the plane took off and we flew home again... But, we're making plans to relocate! Shetland - day 3 - Monday October 8

Our third day in Shetland, and a very special one. Not only my wee boy Samuel celebrated his birthday - he turned 6 - but Monique as well. So while I phoned home early in the morning to sing Happy Birthday to my son, Monique had her own choir on the phone ;) After a quick breakfast, we set out for Lerwick, and on the way there we decided to go for a walk along the beach first, before venturing into town. Wearing my Shetland hat, which became a very welcome, warm and trusty companion The cemetery at the Knab We drove around Breiwick Bay and parked our car at the Knab, a natural promontory facing Bressay, where there are several relics from WWII and also a huge cemetery, with some amazing and beautiful headstones.
