A cowl with a twist - Een cowl met een twist

I have never been a fan of cowls, I never saw the point really. Why knit a cowl, with a set circumference when you can knit a long shawl or scarf, which you can wrap around your neck as loose or tight as you want? Hence, no cowls in my wardrobe.
Until recently. See, I got this book on brioche. Long story...

Aeons ago, at a Breidag in Nieuwegein, I followed a workshop by this woman called Nancy Marchant - who spoke quite good Dutch, which confused me, because with a name like that, you'd expect her to be French, and not American, and definitely not an American who can speak Dutch - and I was tought the basics of brioche knitting. It fascinated me from the start. I had entire sweaters planned in the most intricate brioche patterns, two-colour of course (!), and was already buying yarn in my head.

For some reason, life got in the way, and that sweater never got knit. Lots of others did though, some even in very intricate Fair Isle patterns. Why never brioche? No idea. It just didn't happen.
And then last year, at one of the Craftsy sales, I bought the refresher brioche course. Again, followed it, loved it, made plans... And then nothing.
Weer, fantastisch, allerlei plannen... En weer gebeurde er niets.

Until a while ago, I found out that Nancy Marchant was about to publish her second book. The sample pictures were so amazing, I immediately placed a pre-order. And this time, I was DETERMINED to knit something straight away. No dilly-dallying, no putting it on the backburner, no, STRAIGHT AWAY. What helped was this, a pattern that just screamed KNIT ME. So I did.
Yes, a cowl, but hey, you have to push your boundaries sometimes, don't you? I followed the instructions for the cast-on (complicated, but very doable with the clear instructions), burked and burped, burkYO!burked some more, and voila, before I knew it, it was time to bind off again. Now, THAT was a whole different cup of tea. Let me suffice to say that if you decide to switch around the colours, do NOT attempt an Italian bind-off at 11 at night, after a long day and when drinking wine. Big nono.
Nou, DAT was even wat anders...
But, a week later, when I had some time during the day time, after I had poured myself a fresh cup of coffee, it turned out to be a doddle. Very clear instructions on how to do it, and that soooo helps.
Without further ado, my cowl! I did flash it in a previous post, but I decided it deserved its own, with more piccies.

Pattern/patroon: Ring of Fire
Yarn/garen: homespun/zelfgesponnen merino/silk - merino

And what the best thing was? Nancy asked whether it could be used as a sample project on Ravelry. And she came running up to me at the Brei- and Haakdagen in Rijswijk a few weeks ago to admire the cowl in the flesh. And agreed to have her picture taken with me (no, that's not dirt on your screen, it's spinning fluff on my dress, hahaha). Thanks, Nancy, for the lovely chat and the compliments! I am now also getting ready to knit a Willow, although that Peacock is looking mighty fine... I am rummaging through my stash as we speak...
A few piccies from/of the book, to show you how great it is. If you want to get beyond plain knitting, want to stretch yourself, go buy it! You won't regret it!

The dreaded bind-off. As you can sort of see, lots of piccies, which clearly show you how to do things. A mini workshop in a book, so to say. All the other techniques, the burks and burps, are also visually explained in this part of the book, to get you started properly.

The book then has a section with stitch patterns (75!), showing the most amazing two-colour waves, both front and back of the pattern.

The final part of the book is when it gets really interesting. There are 12 written-out patterns (with diagrams), straight, triangular and cowl-shaped. Something for everyone! The great thing is that Nancy not only uses bulky yarn to knit with, but also has a super wispy shawl in mohair lace. Big love! The left pattern is Peacock. Even bigger love!

Mooi geworden Ammerins.
